Art Print Size Guide: A5 to A1 in Centimetres

Sizing a print for a UK wall means working in centimetres, then checking that the frame you have in mind is sold to the same measurement. Our paper prints are unframed, on 200gsm matte fine art paper. Fixed designs are also available as an assembled Classic frame in A4, A3 or A2, with Perspex glazing and no mat.

A5 to A1 print sizes in centimetres

The figures below describe the paper itself. For landscape artwork, swap width and height. A-series sizes share one proportion, so a design keeps its shape as you size up.

Will an A4 print fit a standard UK frame?

Only if the frame is made for A4. UK shops sell frames in both A-sizes and inches, and the two do not line up: A4 is 21 x 29.7 cm, about 8.3 x 11.7 in, so a frame with an 8 x 10 in opening is too small in both directions. A3 at 29.7 x 42 cm is likewise wider than an 11 x 17 in opening. Buy a frame labelled A4, A3 or A2, or a larger frame with a mount cut to the print size.

Check the opening rather than the outer frame. A frame sold as A2 can carry a mount with a smaller window, and the mount covers the edge of the paper.

Match the size to the furniture

Above a sofa, console or bed, aim for artwork spanning roughly two thirds of the furniture width, gaps included. A 180 cm sofa takes an arrangement around 120–135 cm wide, which is two A2 prints side by side or one A1 with generous wall either side.

Leave 15–25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, so the two read as one group. On a wall with no furniture beneath it, centre the print around eye level, roughly 145–155 cm from the floor.

Choose a size for the room

A5 and A4 suit shelves, narrow walls and small rooms. A3 is the safe all-round size above a desk or a chest of drawers. A2 carries a chimney breast or a small sofa. A1 needs a genuinely wide wall; above a two-seater it tends to look oversized rather than generous.

Check the artwork crop

A photograph rarely shares the A-series proportion, so the custom builder will crop it. Keep faces, text and signatures clear of the edge: frames and mounts cover a few millimetres of paper, and the preview shows the crop you will receive.

Print only or a framed print

Print only arrives unframed, so budget for a frame in the matching A-size. The UK range is unframed matte paper prints on 200gsm fine art paper, supplied without a mount or hanger, plus assembled Classic framed prints in A4, A3 and A2. Metal posters and desk mats are made in our Pakistan studio and are not sold in the UK.

Prints are A-series: A4 is 21 x 29.7 cm, A3 is 29.7 x 42 cm and A2 is 42 x 59.4 cm. Classic frames use the same sizes.

Prints are made to order and delivered in 5–10 business days. Delivery costs £5.95, or is free on orders of £55 and above. Pay by credit or debit card. Prices are in pounds.

Fixed-design prints can be cancelled for any reason within 14 days of delivery. Custom prints made from your own image cannot be cancelled. If an order arrives damaged, defective or incorrect, tell us within 30 days and we will replace or refund it.
