Framed Prints vs Wooden Poster Hangers vs Unframed Posters

Compare frames, wooden hangers and print-only posters using the same artwork, real UK prices and practical advice on sizing, protection and presentation.

Written and reviewed by Lasting Details Studio

A frame gives a print a finished border and a protective front. A wooden poster hanger holds the top and bottom while leaving the paper exposed. An unframed poster is the print alone, giving you the freedom to choose your own frame or display method.

Our recommendation: choose a framed print for a finished gift or a coordinated gallery wall; a wooden hanger for an open, informal display; and print only if you already own a suitable frame or want to choose one separately. The best choice depends on the complete cost, the room and the artwork’s edges—not simply which option looks most expensive.

This guide compares Lasting Details’ UK options. Prices were checked on 24 October 2026. Availability varies by artwork and size; confirm the selected option and current total on the product page.

Framed, hanger or print only: the differences

What you receive and what to consider
OptionWhat is includedBest reason to choose itMain trade-off
Print onlyThe paper print; no frame or wooden railsReuse a frame or choose your own finishAdd the cost and work of a separate display
Wooden hangerA paper print with magnetic wooden rails and hanging cordAn open paper look with a slim border at top and bottomNo glazing; the rails cover part of the artwork’s edges
Classic frameA framed print with Perspex glazing and no mountA complete presentation with the paper behind a protective frontHigher initial cost and a larger outside footprint

For the examples below, we use the same design, Bauhaus Orbit, so you can compare the presentation without changing the artwork. The images are digital catalogue previews, not photographs of a physical sample. Room props and illustrated wall fixings are not included.

Compare actual UK prices at the same size

Comparing an A5 poster with an A2 framed print makes the price gap look larger than it is. A3 and A2 are available in all three presentations for this design, making them useful like-for-like starting points.

Bauhaus Orbit UK prices checked 24 October 2026, before delivery or discounts
Paper sizePrint onlyWooden hangerClassic frame
A3 · 29.7 × 42cm£19£29£99
A2 · 42 × 59.4cm£27£39£119

At A3, the hanger option is £10 more than the print alone. That buys the print-and-hanger combination, not a full frame. The framed option is £80 more than print only. If you buy a separate frame, compare its total cost, glazing and fit with the complete framed product.

Standard UK paper-product delivery is £5.95, with free delivery on orders of £55 or more under the current policy. For one A3 item, that gives £24.95 for print only, £34.95 with a hanger or £99 framed, before discounts. Your basket and checkout confirm the applicable charge. See our shipping information.

When an unframed poster makes sense

Print only: the paper is supplied without a frame, rails or the room accessories shown.

Choose print only when you already have a frame you like, want a particular mount colour, or prefer to work with a local framer. It has the lowest initial product price in this comparison, but it is only the cheapest finished display if your additional framing costs make sense.

Check the frame’s stated print size and any mount opening. A frame sold for an A3 print is different from a larger frame with an A3 mount window, and the outside measurement is different again. For help choosing the paper size, use our wall art size guide.

Without glazing, the paper remains exposed to handling, dust and moisture. Avoid treating tape, putty or clips as universally safe for either the paper or your wall. Follow the fixing manufacturer’s surface instructions and obtain permission where needed.

When a wooden poster hanger is the better fit

Wooden hanger: top and bottom rails change the outline while leaving the paper’s front exposed.

A hanger suits a relaxed study, bedroom or small display where you want the paper to remain visible. The magnetic rails hold the sheet at the top and bottom, and the cord hangs from a suitable wall fixing. The paper is not enclosed behind glazing, so a hanger does not provide the same front protection as a frame.

Our UK hanger selection is A3, A2 or A1, with Natural Oak, Black or White where offered on the chosen product. Check the actual selector rather than assuming every design has every option.

Check the edges before choosing a hanger. The supplier specifies that the wooden strips can cover up to 1.5cm at both the top and bottom, depending on placement. A quote, signature or small detail near either edge may be obscured. For a custom design, keep important content clear of these areas and review the upload preview. A hanger is also not a promise of damage-free wall mounting: the wall fixing must suit the surface and complete item.

When to choose a framed print

Classic frame: a continuous border around the design. This is a digital render; confirm the chosen size and finish before ordering.

A framed print is the most complete option here if you want to give a finished artwork or coordinate several pieces without sourcing separate frames. Our UK Classic selection offers A4, A3 and A2 in Black or Natural, subject to the design’s availability, with Perspex glazing and no mount.

Natural has an oak-effect laminate finish over real wood; it should not be confused with the Natural Oak hanger or described as a solid-oak frame. Black is painted Obeche. Choose by the finish you want around the image, not just by the colour name.

A3 describes the print/glaze size, not the outside frame dimensions. Measure the complete frame when planning furniture clearance or gaps in a gallery wall. Use a fixing suitable for the frame’s weight and your wall; ready-to-hang frame hardware does not mean every wall fixing is supplied or appropriate.

For a hanger, allow space above the paper for the cord as well as checking the rail width. For a frame, allow for the surrounding moulding. A paper template measuring 29.7 × 42cm shows the size of an A3 sheet, but it does not show the complete footprint of either display.

Glazing gives the paper a protective front, but this option is not advertised as waterproof or as UV-filtering conservation framing. Keep all three presentations away from direct sunlight, radiators and persistent damp. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s paper-care guidance explains why light, heat and humidity matter.

Choose by the room and how you will use it

  • You already own an A3 frame: start with print only and verify its opening and fit.
  • You want an informal display with visible paper: compare the wooden hanger, checking the top and bottom of the design.
  • You are buying a finished gift: compare the framed option, then check the size, finish and delivery estimate.
  • You are planning several pictures: compare the complete display cost and outside dimensions, not just the paper prices.
  • The wall is sunny or the room gets damp: choose a better position first; a frame does not make unsuitable conditions harmless.

Common questions

Can I frame an unframed poster later?

Yes. Choose a frame suitable for the print’s dimensions and thickness, and account for any mount. Handle the sheet carefully and avoid folding or attaching permanent adhesive to it.

Do wooden hangers protect a poster?

They support it at the top and bottom, but leave its front and side edges exposed. Choose a glazed frame if a protective front is important, while still keeping the print away from sunlight and damp.

Which option has fewer reflections?

A matte print displayed without glazing has no glass or Perspex surface in front of it to reflect the room. Our Classic frame has Perspex glazing and is not sold here as an anti-reflective option. Think about nearby windows and lamps, and choose the viewing position accordingly.

Can I change the artwork in a poster hanger?

Magnetic rails can be opened to remove the sheet. If you want to display a different print, check its width, orientation and paper suitability first. Do not assume an A3 portrait hanger will fit an A3 landscape sheet: the paper widths are different.

Are frames and hangers available for my own design?

UK custom printing includes presentation choices where supported. Start with custom paper printing, check the offered size and presentation, and follow the artwork preparation guide. Keep essential text clear of hanger rails and check the final crop before adding to your basket.

Is the frame in every product image included?

No. What you receive depends on the selected presentation. Choose “Classic frame” for the framed product or “Wooden hanger” for the hanger combination; “Print only” does not include either.

Compare the three options on one design

Open Bauhaus Orbit as an A3 print only, an A3 Natural Oak hanger print, or an A3 Natural framed print. Compare the selection, total and preview before deciding.

How we checked this comparison

Lasting Details sells the options described here. We compared the same artwork against our UK catalogue on 24 October 2026, including the selected sizes, presentation prices and current delivery policy. This is a buying guide based on catalogue specifications, not a hands-on durability test.

Hanger construction and edge coverage were checked against the supplier’s art-print-and-hanger specification; frame materials and sizing against its Classic frame specification. Our available colours, sizes and glazing are the selection described above, rather than every option in the supplier’s wider range.
